Dr. James Van de Velde (USN, Ret.)

Professor

James Van de Velde, Ph.D., is a Professor at National Defense University. He is also an Associate Adjunct Professor at the National Intelligence University, where he teaches courses on Foreign Cyber Strategies, WMD-Terrorism, and Intelligence Collection and Analysis. He is also Adjunct Faculty in the School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University, where he teaches a course on Great Power Competition. Previously, Dr. Van de Velde was a Lead Associate for the consulting firm, Booz Allen Hamilton, where he consulted to the J5 (Strategy) Division of US Cyber Command, the Defense Threat Reduction Agency, the Open Source Academy, US Special Operations Command, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the National Counter Proliferation Center, the National Counter Terrorism Center, the US Joint Staff, and the US Department of Treasury. He is a former White House Appointee under President George H.W. Bush Sr. for nuclear weapons arms control; former Lecturer of Political Science and Residential College Dean at Yale University; and former State Department Foreign Service Officer. Dr. Van de Velde is an Associate Member of the International Institute of Strategic Studies and has held fellowships at the Center for International Security and Arms Control at Stanford University and the US-Japan Program at Harvard University. Dr. Van de Velde is also a retired US Naval Intelligence Reserve officer and performed active duty assignments at the J2 for Operation RESOLUTE SUPPORT, Kabul, Afghanistan; NATO Headquarters, Brussels, Belgium; Naval Forces Southern Command Europe, Naples, Italy; US Southern Command, Panama; Defense Intelligence Agency Headquarters, Washington, DC; the United States Naval War College, Newport, Rhode Island; and the US Embassy, Singapore. Dr. Van de Velde received his B.A. from Yale University in 1982 and his Ph.D. from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy in 1988.
