Mr. Gregory Schiffer

Instructor

Gregory Schiffer is an instructor at the Eisenhower School for National Security and Resource Strategy at the National Defense University in Washington, D.C.

Mr. Schiffer is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service with 24 years of State Department experience. His most recent assignment was as director of the Office of Macroeconomic Affairs within the State Department’s Bureau of Economic and Business Affairs. In that role, Mr. Schiffer led the U.S. delegation to the Paris Club group of creditor nations charged with sovereign debt restructurings for countries that have defaulted or find themselves in debt distress.

Prior to that assignment, Mr. Schiffer led the Office of Afghanistan and Pakistan Affairs for the State Department’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement, where he worked on civilian law enforcement and rule of law capacity assistance programs in the two countries. His overseas assignments have included Islamabad, Moscow, Bogota, and Mexico City (on two separate occasions). Previous Washington assignments have included deputy director of the Office of Andean Affairs, NSC director for Mexico and Canada, and desk officer for Panama and Nicaragua.

Mr. Schiffer is a graduate of the National War College (2014) and the State Department’s nine-month Economic and Commercial Studies program (2008). He holds a B.A. in Russian, Economics, and International Studies from Trinity University in San Antonio. He was born and raised in Houston, Texas. He is married and has three daughters.
