Colonel Altwan L. Whitfield is a native of Georgetown, South Carolina. In 1996, she joined the military as a Transport Operator and was assigned to the 1052nd National Guard Kingstree, SC. In 2001, she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Special Education with a concentration in Leadership from Converse College in Spartanburg, SC.
Later, she became a Transportation Officer and was the Assistant Officer in Charge (OIC) 138th Port Movement Control Team, 25th Transportation Battalion, Osan, Korea, after which she was assigned as the Detachment Commander, 70th Movement Control Team, 6th Transportation Battalion, 7th Sustainment Brigade, Fort Eustis VA. In 2004, she served as the Assistant Operations Officer, 6th Transportation Battalion, 7th Sustainment Brigade, Fort Eustis, VA, and later attended the Combined Logistics Captains Career Course at Fort Eustis, VA. She was then assigned as the Support Operation Transportation Officer, 501st Sustainment Brigade, Camp Carroll, Korea, and served as the Company Commander, Headquarters Company, 498th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 501st Sustainment Brigade, Camp Carroll, Korea. Later, she was reassigned to Fort Wainwright, Alaska, where she was selected for a second Company Command for the A/1-25 Stryker Brigade, 25th Brigade Support Battalion, 25th Infantry Division, Fort Wainwright, AK. During her time in the military, she deployed to Kuwait and Iraq. She also served as the Army Systems Team (AST) Chair for the Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) program, Army Test and Evaluation Command (ATEC), Army Evaluation Center (AEC), Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD. She earned her Master's Degree in Public Administration with a Concentration in Education from Troy University after attending the Command and Staff General Staff Course (CGSC) at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. LTC Whitfield served as the Division Transportation Officer (DTO) for the 25th Infantry Division, Schofield Barracks, HI, and as the U.S. Army Transportation Agency (White House) director from 2015-2018. She was then assigned as the Professor of Military Science at Bowie State University from 2018-2019. On 17 May 2021, LTC Whitfield completed a successful battalion command of the 841st Transportation Battalion in North Charleston, SC.
Recently, she graduated from the National Defense University, Eisenhower School with a Master Science in National Resource Strategy degree.
