CAPT Gregory H. Freitag, MD, USN

Assistant Professor

Captain Gregory Freitag is a native of Gig Harbor, Washington. He attended Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences 
graduating in 2002 with his medical doctorate. He is also board certified in Family Medicine.

A Distinguished Graduate and award-winning research fellow of the National War College Class of 2019, Captain Freitag holds a Master of 
Science degree in National Security Strategy. During his course of study, he researched the role of Health Security policy to advance U.S.
national interests in the Horn of Africa (HOA). His thesis posited, U.S. support of fragile nations’ healthcare systems improves their resiliency 
against violent extremist organizations and resist malign influence from U.S. peer or near-peer competitors.

In 2025, Captain Freitag was selected as a Dark Trident Fellow for Academic Year 2025-2026. As part of this prestigious pilot program established by the Chief of Naval Operations (CNO), he contributes to a select group of officers tasked with providing strategic advice and developing actionable products to address current and future Navy challenges, supporting the execution of the CNO's NAVPLAN and Project 33 targets. This role underscores his expertise as a strategic thinker, leveraging advanced education and diverse experiences to  identify emerging threats and opportunities in national security.

He assumed his duties as Assistant Professor at the Dwight D. Eisenhower School in September 2022. Prior to that assignment he served as Chief Medical Officer (CMO) and Director for Quality, Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Command Quantico in July 2019. Captain Freitag deployed as an Individual  Augmentee during this assignment in 2021 to the EMF ROLE II hospital supporting Combined Joint Task 
Force – HOA as the CMO and Senior Medical Officer.

Captain Freitag has also completed duties at the operational, headquarters, and international levels. Positions afloat have included Commander, Amphibious Task Force (CATF) Surgeon and Chief Staff Officer for Amphibious Squadron SIX and Officer in Charge for Fleet Surgical Team TWO. Ashore, Captain Freitag served as the Office of Women’s Health Action Officer and Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Medical 
Program Manager in M3, Bureau of Medicine and Surgery. While in support of NATO, he was the Executive Physician Mentor to the Afghan National Security Force’s medical departments. In the medical treatment facilities, he was the Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Medical Staff and Family Medicine Department Head at Naval Hospital Oak Harbor.

Captain Freitag is qualified as a Flight Surgeon and Surface Warfare Medical Department Officer serving at both Strike Fighter Squadron ONE ZERO SIX and Carrier Air Wing THREE. 

Captain Freitag is a Level III Joint Qualified Officer, holds the National Security Studies subspecialty code, the Joint Professional Military Education Senior College, Individual Augmentee Joint Inter-Service/Agency/Coalition, CATF Surgeon, and Executive Medicine Additional Qualifier Designators. His awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (4 awards), Navy/Marine 
Corps Commendation Medal (2 awards), Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and multiple unit, service, and campaign awards
