Joel Reifman most recently served as U.S. Consul General in Hyderabad, India, and immediately prior, as Deputy Chief of Mission at U.S. Embassy Dhaka, Bangladesh. In the State Department in Washington, Mr. Reifman worked in the Bureau of Global Talent Management as a Senior Career Development Officer, represented State as Vice Chair of the National HUMINT Requirements Tasking Center, and served as Deputy Director of the Office of Aviation Negotiations in the Bureau of Economic and Business Affairs. Mr. Reifman was also a Pearson Fellow in the Office of Senator Joseph Lieberman.
Mr. Reifman’s earlier overseas assignments include Senior Deputy Coordinating Director for Development and Economic Affairs at U.S. Embassy Kabul, Afghanistan; ChargĂ© d’Affaires at U.S. Embassy Asmara, Eritrea; Provincial Reconstruction Team Leader in Iraq’s western Anbar province; and Economic Counselor at both U.S. Embassy Panama and U.S. Embassy Islamabad, Pakistan.
Before joining the State Department, Mr. Reifman served as an Assistant Staff Judge Advocate in the U.S. Air Force. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in English literature from the University of Michigan and a Juris Doctorate from Southern Methodist University. Mr. Reifman is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service with the rank of Minister-Counselor.
