Andrew Leith graduated from the Australian Royal Military College, Duntroon with a Bachelor of Arts in Military Studies. A career in the Royal Australian Artillery included a number of regimental and staff appointments including Aide de Camp to the Chief of the Australian Army Reserve, service as a United Nations Military Observer on the Iran-Iraq Cease Fire Line in 1989 and with the International Force in East Timor from September 1999 to January 2000. From February 2000 to June 2001 Andrew Leith worked for the UN Department of Peacekeeping Operations as the civilian Chief of Protocol for the United Nations Transitional Administration in East Timor and from July 2001 to July 2002 was appointed as the Deputy Head of the Department of Trade & Investment for the UN Administration responsible for assisting East Timorese counterparts in developing the regulatory framework for Foreign Direct Investment within the country. In 2005 Andrew Leith returned to active duty as the Australian Defence Force instructor teaching national security strategy and public policy at the U.S. National Defense University in Washington DC and in 2006 was employed as a civilian member of faculty. From July 2010 to June 2011 Andrew Leith took leave without pay from the University and resided in the Solomon Islands where he facilitated research on behalf of the Australian Government’s Civil Military Centre focusing on the lessons learned by the Regional Assistance Mission to the Solomon Islands. Andrew Leith currently teaches macroeconomics and national security policy in the fall term and leads a program in the spring which focuses on how emerging technologies impact the Defense Industrial Base's ability to support the US National Security Strategy.
