Lieutenant Colonel Shawn D. Smith, a native of Missouri City, TX, was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Field Artillery Branch after graduating from the United States Military Academy at West Point on May 31, 1997. Upon completing the Field Artillery Officer Basic Course at Fort Sill, OK, he served as a Platoon Fire Direction Officer, Platoon Leader, and Targeting Officer in 1st Battalion, 5th Field Artillery Regiment, 1st Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, KS, from 1998-2001. In 2002, while serving as the Division Artillery (DIVARTY) S4 at Headquarters, 1st Cavalry Division Artillery, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, TX, Lieutenant Colonel Smith was notified of his acceptance into the U.S. Army’s Funded Legal Education Program. He earned his Juris Doctorate degree from the Texas Tech University School of Law in 2005. He also earned a Master of Laws degree in Military Law from the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General’s Legal Center and School in 2009. Lieutenant Colonel Smith is currently assigned to the faculty at National Defense University, Washington, DC.
Lieutenant Colonel Smith’s previous assignments in the U.S. Army JAG Corps include service as Chief, International Law, and as Chief, Fiscal & Administrative Law, U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, Camp Smith, HI; Deputy Staff Judge Advocate, 4th Infantry Division and Fort Carson, Fort Carson, CO; Company Grade Assignment Officer, Office of the Judge Advocate General, Washington, DC; Brigade Judge Advocate, 2nd Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, KS; Operational Law Attorney and Trial Counsel, III Corps and Fort Hood, Fort Hood, TX. He has deployed three times to Iraq in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom (2006) and New Dawn (2009 & 2010).
Lieutenant Colonel Smith’s military education includes completion of the U.S. Army’s Field Artillery Officer Basic Course, Field Artillery Captains Career Course, Combined Arms and Services Staff School, Judge Advocate Officer Basic Course, Judge Advocate Officer Graduate Course, and Command and General Staff College. His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal (x2), Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (x3), Army Commendation Medal (x5), Army Achievement Medal, Joint Meritorious Unit Award (x2), Meritorious Unit Citation (x2), National Defense Service Medal (x2), Iraq Campaign Medal (with 4 campaign stars), Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon (x3), and the Army Staff Identification Badge.
Lieutenant Colonel Smith is a Member of the Bar of the State of Texas. He is married to the former Ms. Tiffany Ward. They have two children - Robert (7) and Cadence (2).
