Captain Torruella enlisted in the Navy in 1986 and commissioned in 1992. Afloat he served aboard three fast attack submarines (OLYMPIA, ALBUQUEREQUE, and SANTA FE), embarked with Carrier Strike Group FIVE aboard the KITTY HAWK in Yokosuka Japan, and shepherded the C4 systems of all San Diego based amphibious ships as a part of Expeditionary Strike Group THREE. Captain Torruella also embarked aboard the MOUNT WHITNEY in Gaeta Italy in support of multiple NATO and multinational exercise and operations.
Ashore Captain Torruella served as a software engineer developing data mining solutions for NAVSEA, and served in the Joint Staff J8 as a Branch Chief and Executive Assistant to the Deputy Director for Studies and Analysis. In addition, Captain Torruella was the Deputy Chief Information Officer and Chief of C4 Cyberspace Operations for the United States European Command in Stuttgart Germany, and later served as the Director of Communications and Network Operations and Chief Information Officer for COMMANDER NAVAL FORCES EUROPE, NAVAL FORCES AFRICA, US SIXTH FLEET in Naples Italy.
Captain Torruella holds a Bachelor’s of Science in Physics from the Naval Academy, a Master’s of Science in Computer Science from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute of Technology, and is a 2009 graduate of the Eisenhower School, at National Defense University. He has been certified by the Navy as a Nuclear Engineer, and is also a Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH), Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), Chief Information Security Officer (CISO), and Chief Information Officer (CIO). He has lectured in cyber security and maritime cyberspace operations in several NATO forums and has been published in Joint Forces Quarterly, Naval Institute Proceedings, and the Navy CHiPs Magazine.
Captain Torruella currently serves as both a Strategy and Cyberspace Industry Study Instructor at the Eisenhower School, National Defense University. He resides with his wife, Kristyne, their four children Michael, Brandon, Sydney and Gabrielle in Northern Virginia.
