CAPT Theodore J. Nunamaker, USN

Eisenhower School

Captain Theodore J. Nunamaker, USN, currently assigned as an Assistant Professor of Strategic Leadership at The Dwight D. Eisenhower School for National Security and Resource Strategy, is a resident of Meridian, Idaho, and a 1996 graduate of the United States Naval Academy. He was awarded a B.S. in Political Science with a minor in French.

Upon graduation and commissioning, CAPT Nunamaker reported to Everett, Washington for his initial sea duty in USS CALLAGHAN (DDG 994). Serving as Damage Control Assistant, he was a member of CALLAGHAN’s decommissioning crew.

Subsequently assigned to USS PRINCETON (CG 59), he served as Ordnance Officer, Air Warfare Officer, and Navigator, and completed his first deployment to the Middle East. While onboard PRINCETON, CAPT Nunamaker was selected to be an Olmsted scholar in Tartu, Estonia. He arrived in Estonia in July 2001 and began his studies at Tartu University the same year. He graduated optime approbatur in 2003 with a M.A. in Political Science.

After leaving Estonia in 2003, CAPT Nunamaker returned to sea as Operations Officer in USS HIGGINS (DDG 76). He detached from HIGGINS after completing a Middle East deployment and reported as commanding officer of SEA FIGHTER (FSF 1), an experimental high-speed catamaran. Following that assignment, he took command of Coastal Patrol Crew INDIA. During his tenure he commanded USS THUNDERBOLT (PC 12) in Norfolk, Virginia and USS FIREBOLT (PC 10) in Manama, Bahrain.

Returning to shore duty, he served as Flag Aide to the Commander, Naval Surface Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet, and then as Special Assistant to the Combatant Commander, U.S. Southern Command. CAPT Nunamaker’s most recent sea duty in USS STERETT (DDG 104), homeported in San Diego, serving first as the ship’s executive officer and then as commanding officer. During his time in command STERETT deployed to the Western Pacific and Middle East with the CARL VINSON Strike Group.

Prior to reporting to The Eisenhower School, CAPT Nunamaker served on the Chief of Naval Operations staff in the Operations, Plans and Strategy Directorate as a Global Force Manager.

He has been awarded the Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, and Navy and Marine Corps Commendation and Achievement Medals. He also wears various service and campaign awards.
